If you like to drive and meet new people, working for the City of Livonia Community Transit might be the perfect fit.

LCT is looking for drivers to transport people with disabilities and seniors 60 and older to doctor appointments, shopping areas, salons, employment and more. Drivers must have a chauffeur’s license.

The rides are for Livonia residents only and go to locations in Livonia and one mile outside the city if it’s for doctor appointments. LCT doesn’t run on major holidays.

Only residents of Livonia are eligible for the service.

Job details

The part-time jobs are between 20-25 hours weekly Monday through Friday. LCT generally has two shifts during the hours of 7 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Drivers are paid $17.17 hourly.

“You have to like working with people and to be able to pivot no matter what the day will bring,” said Felicia Cross, LCT program supervisor.

The need for more LCT drivers increased primarily during the pandemic.

“We had drivers who didn’t want to work then, and when it eased up they decided they didn’t want to come back to work,” Cross said. “Most of our drivers are seniors or have retired from something else.”

One LCT driver has held the job since 2000, another since 2004 and yet another since 2007.

“LCT drivers are people who like doing it as opposed to having to do it,” Cross said. “You have to like the flexibility and the fact that it’s not the same Is This For You? Livonia Community Transit looking for part-time drivers thing every day. Issues may arise, and you have to go with the flow.”

Sometimes appointments for rides are canceled and other unexpected things happen, Cross said. The bus service may also be affected by snow or other severe weather conditions.

“Having a flexible schedule is a big part of this,” Cross said. “Schedules vary, and flexibility is a big part of that. They pick them up and get them to their destinations on time and do it safely. Some people are in wheelchairs, so the driver has to load the wheelchair and secure it properly.”

Scheduling is arranged on a first-come, first-serve basis. Reservations are necessary and can be made by calling LCT at (734) 466-2700. LCT can’t accommodate children younger than 18.

Another way to ride

As a transportation option, LCT also offers the Shopping Bus and the Medical Bus. The Shopping Bus is strictly for passengers who like going shopping as a group and the Medical Bus is for medical appointments only. There is no charge for either of these services but reservations are necessary.

Livonia Community Transit also provides To Work service for passengers coming to Livonia from the SMART and Detroit Department of Transportation (D-DOT) bus systems. The To Work service takes riders to selected locations only. Smart and D-DOT riders must call the day before to schedule rides.

Riders are picked up from the SMART and D-DOT hubs in the morning and dropped off at the hub for the return trip in the afternoon. There is no midday service.
