After a prolonged closure due to the COVID-19 pandemic and extensive renovations, the Belleville Area Museum, a cherished cultural landmark, reopened its doors in December 2023 with a significant enhancement – the Museum Connector Project.

Funded by a generous $25,000 grant awarded to the Belleville Area Historical Society by the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs (MCACA) and matched by Van Buren Township, this project symbolizes a new chapter in the Museum's history, seamlessly integrating its two distinct properties with a state-of-the-art glass enclosure.

This glass enclosure connects the two Belleville Area Museum properties – the main structure, Historic Old Van Buren Township Hall; and the archives stored in the decommissioned Van Buren Fire Station #1.

The Museum Connector enhances the visitor experience in several significant ways by providing a seamless flow between exhibits, allowing for a more cohesive and immersive journey through Belleville's history. In addition, the connector improves accessibility, ensuring that all visitors can easily navigate the entire Museum regardless of mobility. Also, it created the exhibit space for the community-beloved 1909 Buggy and 1919 Model T, donated by former local physician Dr. Herbert J. Robb.

The Museum reopening was marked by the enchanting Festival of Holiday Trees, which illuminated the venue from December 2-23. This dazzling display of lights and magic and the opportunity for memorable photographs with Santa Claus drew crowds from near and far. The event was a heartwarming display of community spirit, as local businesses generously decorated and donated the trees, showcasing their deep-rooted love for our town. The Santa photo sessions were top-rated, drawing families and visitors in large numbers.

As we welcome spring, the Museum anticipates a lineup of exciting events. A highlight of this year's calendar is the much-anticipated return of the 2024 Quilt Show. Throughout March, the Museum will exhibit a stunning array of quilts, showcasing the intricate artistry and rich history embedded in each piece.

The Belleville Area Museum houses many artifacts, photographs and documents that chronicle the area's journey from a 19th-century rural settlement to a vibrant modern community. This Museum has served as a guardian of local history and a hub for community engagement and education.

In a special nod to local history, the Museum is now home to a collection of Belleville High School yearbooks dating back to 1923. These yearbooks offer a unique glimpse into the past, capturing the spirit and memories of generations past. However, availability is limited so we encourage interested individuals to visit our website for available years.

Furthermore, the Museum is embarking on a heartfelt project, "Living Legacy: Stories from the Tri-Community," to connect with individuals who have deep community roots and stories to tell. This initiative is an excellent opportunity for local voices to be heard and for their stories to be preserved and shared with future generations.

The Museum has an array of thrilling events and workshops lined up, so we encourage you to stay connected and up to date with all our events and announcements by following us on social media.

Join in celebrating the heritage and cultural vibrancy of our tri-communities.
