A great place for canines, humans to socialize

A trip to the Brownstown Dog Park might be just what the vet ordered if you’ve got a friendly canine.

Dogs can run free without a leash and the owners oftentimes strike up friendships, too.

Registration required

Owners must register their dogs at the Brownstown Water Department, 21313 Telegraph, to receive a key fob that opens the park gate.

All breeds are welcome in two separate areas – one for big dogs and the other for small dogs. Small dogs are allowed in the big dog area but big dogs aren’t allowed in the small dog area.

Take it slow if you have a skittish dog, said Director of Public Works Justin Danosky.

It might take exposing fearful dogs to the area a couple of times, he added. The more dogs that are there, the more intimidating it is for a new pooch.

Room for more

The park is open from dawn to dusk and midday is the least busy time. All breeds are welcome as long as they’re friendly. There are currently about 90 dogs registered at the park, but there’s room for many more, Danosky said.

“Go at your own comfort level for you and your dog,” Danosky said. “Check it out and if you’re uncomfortable come back another time when there’s less dogs.”

Here are some rules to follow:
• Dog owners must have proof of Brownstown residency and pay a $25 annual fee. The pass includes up to three dogs.
• Dog owners must provide a signed dog park waiver to keep the township from being liable if something unexpected happens.
• Dogs must have up-to-date dog licenses.
• Dog owners must provide proof of current vaccinations, including a rabies certificate, as well as proof of Bordetella and Distemper, Parvo and Lepto shots.

Time to socialize

Dog owners are known to have a good time at the park, too, Danosky said.

“Meeting other people who have the same breed is always fun,” he said. “The park is as much to socialize for the people as the dogs. Sometimes dog owners set times to meet up and hang out.”

Mary Gregory volunteers next door at the Brownstown Animal Shelter, working on adoptions and medical records. She’s at the dog park daily to give the dogs exercise.

“The dogs have a ball out there, I wish more cities had dog parks,” Gregory said. “It’s especially great for our dogs at the shelter because they can get out and exercise. All the dogs have to behave. Sometimes they get escalated in playing and sometimes the play can turn into a tiff.”

Dogs that get into a fight must leave immediately. But it doesn’t happen often, she said. In the 12 years she has been going to the dog park, Gregory said, she could count the number of fights on one hand.

The dog park is located next to the Brownstown Animal Shelter at 23700 Lillian. Call the Water Department at (734) 675-4000 for more information
