Change is inevitable, but every so often it arrives in grand fashion – reshaping spaces and reimagining possibilities. At Plymouth District Library, 2025 will mark just such a transformation, as the library embarks on what director Shauna Anderson terms “a reinvention.”
For months, visitors have noticed books shifting, shelves relocating and collections evolving. These changes set the stage for a full-scale interior renovation, designed to create a timeless, warm and inspiring space.
What will this new chapter look like? The library tasked MCD Architects with crafting a design that honors the library’s role as both a sanctuary of knowledge and a community hub. Their thoughtful design blends historic charm with modern function and features a rich, moody palette, warm lighting, and a scholarly aesthetic reminiscent of “dark academia.”
For a preview, visitors can check out the library’s newly refreshed Teen Zone, which now only awaits new carpeting.
This ambitious project will happen in phases: the upper floor in summer, the main level in autumn and the youth department at year’s end. Some areas will be temporarily inaccessible, but the end result will be a library that better serves how people gather, read and learn.
Funding comes from the library’s capital fund and investment revenue, a testament to years of careful planning. But beyond fresh carpet and paint, Anderson notes that this reinvention is about redefining how the library serves the community for decades to come.
“We are dreaming big,” she said. “We’ve listened to our community and challenged ourselves to create spaces that enrich lives in new ways.”
Some of the features library users can look forward to include more integrated technology, expanded seating, a larger children’s play area, and even a drive-through service window.
Through it all, the library will remain open, with the welcoming support, meeting spaces and programming our community loves – including the popular Summer Reading Program (registration opens June 1!).
