This August, Royal Oak will serve as the gathering point for railroad enthusiasts, families, local residents and visitors from across southeast Michigan as Canadian National Railway (CN) brings its America 250 Hometown Whistle Stop Tour to downtown Royal Oak on Wednesday, August 19, 2026.**

The special event will celebrate America's 250th anniversary while highlighting the rich railroad heritage that helped build communities throughout the region, including Royal Oak and the surrounding Metro Detroit area.

Long before Royal Oak became one of Metro Detroit's most vibrant downtowns, the railroad helped shape the community's growth and development. The rail line that runs through the heart of the city traces its roots to the historic Grand Trunk Western Railroad, which connected Royal Oak to Detroit, Port Huron, Chicago, and communities throughout Michigan and Canada.

The railroad transported agricultural products, coal, lumber, automobiles, manufactured goods, and countless other commodities that helped transform Royal Oak from a small settlement into a thriving suburban community. Businesses moved near the railroad because it provided direct access to customers and markets throughout North America, helping fuel economic growth that continues today.

More than a century later, rail transportation remains a vital part of Michigan's economy. The line through Royal Oak continues to serve industries throughout southeast Michigan, moving finished automobiles, automotive parts, steel, consumer goods, grain, construction materials, and many of the products used every day by residents and businesses.

During the Royal Oak stop, local elected officials, community leaders and railroad representatives are expected to participate in a brief ceremony featuring welcoming remarks, commemorative presentations and special giveaways. The event may also include limited VIP tours aboard the train, along with an official photo opportunity in front of CN's specially painted America 250 locomotive, which features patriotic red, white and blue graphics and a striking American eagle design.
