For more than 60 years, the South Oakland Art Association (SOAA) has quietly shaped the artistic life of south Oakland County and the greater Detroit area. Founded in 1960, the nonprofit organization has long provided a space where artists can gather, learn from one another and share their work with the broader community.

The association brings together artists of all experience levels, from those just beginning their creative journeys to established professionals. Each month from September through June, members meet at the Mahany/Meininger Community Center in Royal Oak, where presentations, demonstrations and conversations encourage both artistic growth and connection. The meetings have become a cornerstone of SOAA’s mission to foster creativity in a supportive, collaborative environment.

SOAA’s programming continued into the new year with a series of engaging events. At 7 p.m. on January 6, 2026, members heard from glass artist Herb Babcock. Following this is a presentation from painter Leigh Wright on February 3, 2026. In March, the group will shift its focus outward, participating in a community outreach project by painting bowls for an Empty Bowls event they are helping to organize, using art as a means to support those facing food insecurity.

Exhibitions and public engagement are also central to the association’s work. SOAA hosts an annual members show and regularly participates as a group in exhibitions and events throughout metropolitan Detroit. Currently, several members have artwork on display in the Detroit Zoo’s Camouflage exhibit, which runs from November 1, 2025 through February 28, 2026, showcasing the range and creativity of the group’s artists.

As it looks ahead, the South Oakland Art Association remains committed to its founding purpose: strengthening the arts through community, collaboration and shared experience. Artists and art enthusiasts alike are encouraged to learn more about the organization and its ongoing work.
