Local organization provides community-based services to those in need

EAI, a nonprofit mental health organization assisting those in the community with vocational rehabilitation and adult day-care needs, provides compassionate support and assistance to adults with intellectual disabilities and seniors with dementia, Alzheimer’s disease and memory-related impairments. They maintain the highest level of ability and independence and meaningful community integration in a safe and nurturing environment.

Carolyn Sloan, president and founder of EAI, believes that “every life holds value, regardless of location, age, gender or disability.”

“There is a plan and purpose for everyone,” she said. “Having a disability should never disqualify anyone from accessing every aspect of life.”

Located in a 9,000-square-foot facility on Ecorse Road in Taylor, EAI has been offering these community-based services to adults and seniors in Western Wayne County and the Downriver communities since 1996. They serve about 40 seniors and 80-90 adults with disabilities, including many of whom come two or three times a week to take advantage of their services.

EAI Senior Services includes programs to assist elders with dementia or other related memory impairment in maintaining a quality life while engaging in various social and recreational activities in a secure environment. Senior services include adult daycare, caregiver support groups, individual counseling, and respite services.

EAI Vocational Services include a wide range of support services to enhance persons with intellectual disabilities or mental disorders obtain employment including skill building, job development, work readiness, job coaching, volunteering, and life skill training.
