Awards were given to firefighters, police and civilians for their outstanding efforts in fighting the fire that occurred at the Meadows of Southgate senior living apartments, 16201 Allen Road, in October. The fire displaced over a hundred senior Southgate residents and sent five people to the hospital.

Those honored went above and beyond taking care of these residents, both during the fire event and afterward.

They are:

• Meritorious Leadership Award Ribbons in Southgate – Capt. James Schmittou, Fire Marshal Jeff Niemann, Fire Lt. Ken Kilander and Police Lt. Brian Klonowski.

• Staff Leadership Award in Southgate – Senior Center Coordinator Diane Grabowski, Parks and Recreation Director Julie Goddard, Department of Public Services Director Kevin Anderson and Veterans Memorial Library Director Don Priest.

• Police officers and firefighters from Southgate who received Medal of Valor – Police Sgt. Nicholas Merony, Det. Sgt. Nathan Mosczynski, Police Officer Ryan Lynch, Police Officer Harkiran Sembhi, Police Officer Adam Willinger, Police Officer Thomas McClure, Police Officer Morgan Parrish, Fire Sgt. Timothy Georvassilis, Fire Sgt. Austin Winrow, Firefighter Brenden Pawlaczyk, Firefighter Joel Martin, Firefighter Christopher Campbell and Firefighter Brandon Hicks.

• Teamwork Award for Allen Park – Mayor Gail McLeod, Fire Chief Jeff O’Riley, Lt. Mike Schook, Sgt. Derrick Spencer, Eng. Mike Estrada, Eng. Ryan Croft, Firefighter Chris Ajlouny, Firefighter Tom Malcolm, Firefighter Mike Franz and Firefighter Trent Olson.

• Teamwork Award for Brownstown – Supervisor Edward L. Smith, Fire Chief Jeff Drouillard, Fire Inspector John Horvath, Police Chief Jeff Watson, Fire Lt. Chris Russo, Firefighter Don Melow, Firefighter Frank Bianchi, Firefighter Phil Brock, Firefighter Jake Pisarzewski and Firefighter Corey Raines.

• Teamwork Award for the City of Ecorse – Mayor Lamar Tidwell, Fire Chief Daniel Wright, Fire Sgt. Kevin Rudberg, Firefighter Steven Szymanski, Firefighter Zach Dobrick, Firefighter Jacob Hutchinson and Firefighter Devon O’Brien.

• Teamwork Award for City of Riverview – Mayor Andrew Swift, Police Chief John Allen, Fire Chief Ron Lammers, Deputy Chief Rodney Branham, Fire Sgt. Brian Davenport, Firefighter Amy Dunn, Firefighter Tim Webb, Firefighter Joseph Strassner and Police Officer Sara Lane.

• Teamwork Award for City of Taylor – Mayor Tim Woolley, Fire Chief Stephen Portis, Fire Battalion Chief Russ McNamee, Fire Capt. Bill Currie, Fire Lt. Ron Evina, Fire Capt. John Mesky, Fire Lt. Jason Anderson, Firefighter Alec Baker, Firefighter Derek Gornall, Firefighter Andrew Bartrum, Firefighter William Queen, Firefighter Brendon Wheeler and Firefighter Christopher Alcock.

• Teamwork Award for City of Trenton – Mayor Steven Rzeppa, Fire Chief Keith Anderson, Deputy Chief Jason Martyniak, Fire Capt. Derek Decker, Sgt. John Kalisz, Eng. Tony Damiani and Firefighter John Hernandez.

• Teamwork Award for City of Wyandotte – Mayor Robert DeSana, Police Chief Brian Zalewski, Fire Chief Jeremy Moline, Fire Capt. Josh Rothe, Fire Lt. Kyle Caparaotta, Firefighter Matt Flood, Firefighter Thomas Cunningham, Firefighter Dominic Rossetti, Firefighter Jeremy Waara, Firefighter James Waara, Firefighter Nate Zrnich, Police Lt. Chuck Seeley, Officer Jorden Judge and Officer Kyle Gouth.
