When the Canton Chamber of Commerce committed to bringing the National Civics Bee® to its community in 2024, leaders hoped to spark curiosity about government, inspire civic pride and empower the next generation of changemakers. What they achieved went far beyond expectations.

In just a short time, the Chamber has built one of the nation’s most successful local Civics Bee programs – culminating in an extraordinary milestone in 2025.

Ashley T., the Canton Chamber’s 2025 local first-place winner, also became the second finalist from the Canton program at the State of Michigan competition, and then went on to represent Michigan at the National Civics Bee® Championship in Washington, D.C.

Her journey from local competitor to national stage is more than a personal achievement – it’s a testament to the power of community collaboration and the Chamber’s commitment to civic education.

Building Civic Leaders Early

The National Civics Bee®, an initiative of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation, encourages middle school students to engage in civics through a 750-word essay identifying a community issue and proposing a thoughtful solution involving local citizens and applying Civics principles. Finalists then demonstrate their knowledge through live quiz rounds and public speaking.

For the Canton Chamber, strengthening the business community by investing in future leaders is important. By hosting the competition locally, the Chamber created an accessible and inspiring pathway for students to explore how government works -and how their voice can make a difference.

“We know strong communities and strong economies depend on informed, engaged citizens,” said Chamber President Thomas Paden. “The National Civics Bee® is about equipping students with the confidence and knowledge to lead.”

A Community Effort

The Chamber’s success did not happen in isolation. Local educators, business sponsors, volunteers, and civic leaders rallied around the initiative. Schools embraced the essay component as an opportunity to strengthen writing, public speaking and critical thinking skills. Local sponsors supported scholarships and event logistics. Community members filled seats at the live competition, cheering on students who spoke passionately about real-world issues affecting Canton and beyond.

Ashley T. stood out for her depth of research, poise and thoughtful approach to problem-solving. Her ability to articulate both the issue of her essay and a realistic path forward impressed judges at every level.

From Canton to the Capitol

Competing on November 11, 2025, in the nation’s capital, Ashley joined finalists from across the country in a celebration of civic knowledge and leadership. For the Canton Chamber, seeing a local student take the national stage for the second time was a proud moment.

“It validates the work happening here at home,” said Canton Chamber National Civics Bee® chair Pamela Batcho. “When we invest in students, provide meaningful opportunities and rally community support, extraordinary things can happen.”

Lasting Impact

Beyond trophies and titles, the National Civics Bee® has created a lasting impact in Canton. Students are engaging more deeply in discussions about local government. Educators are integrating civic literacy into intentional classroom experiences, business leaders are recognizing their role in fostering informed citizenship and government officials are paying attention to these future leaders.

The program has also elevated the Chamber’s visibility as more than a business advocacy organization – it has positioned the Canton Chamber of Commerce as a convener, connector and champion for youth leadership.

As the Chamber looks ahead, leaders are focused on expanding participation, increasing school involvement in surrounding communities and building on the momentum generated by Ashley’s remarkable run.

Her success serves as both inspiration and invitation: civic engagement is not reserved for adults in elected office. It begins in classrooms, in communities and in opportunities like the National Civics Bee®

In Canton, that opportunity is thriving – and the results are reaching all the way to Washington, D.C. Join us at the live local event on April 22 at Eastern Michigan University. More information about the National Civics Bee® is available at https://www.cantonchamber.com/civics-bee-2025-26
