South Lyon Community School District is more than just a place of academic learning – it's a vital community hub dedicated to fostering growth, support and empowerment for all its members. Through a diverse range of initiatives, we strive to address the multifaceted needs of our community, strengthening the bonds that unite us.

One particularly impactful program is the monthly Grandparents Raising Grandchildren group, expertly facilitated by Lisa Grodsky from Oakland Livingston Human Service Agency (OLHSA). Recognizing the unique challenges faced by these caregivers, these meetings provide a crucial support system, offering a safe and understanding environment for shared experiences and practical guidance.

Expert presenters, including a representative from the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, have offered invaluable insights into navigating complex state systems, ensuring access to vital resources. The Michigan State University Extension Child and Family Development Extension has provided enriching educational opportunities, while the Poison Center Educator from Michigan Poison and Drug Information Center has equipped participants with essential safety knowledge. This comprehensive approach ensures that grandparents are well-prepared to provide the best possible care for their grandchildren, reinforcing the strength and resilience of our community.

Understanding that parental engagement is paramount to student success, South Lyon Community Schools also prioritizes family partnerships by hosting a Parent Partnership Series. These sessions, thoughtfully designed to accommodate diverse schedules, have been offered both virtually and in-person, ensuring accessibility for all families.

Dedicated counselors and therapists from local organizations generously shared their expertise on a wide array of topics, empowering parents with practical tools and strategies. From building strong parent-child relationships and understanding anxiety to fostering healthy friendships and recognizing the functions of behavior, these sessions addressed the real-life challenges faced by families.

The rich tapestry of topics reflects our commitment to providing comprehensive support, equipping families with the knowledge and skills they need to nurture their children's growth and development.

In February, Judge Law and Judge Reeds provided families with insights into the Oakland County court system, sharing information about its processes and functions. This outreach aimed to educate the community about the judicial system's role within the county.

Furthermore, South Lyon Community Schools has forged a powerful and collaborative partnership with the South Lyon Area Youth Assistance (SLAYA). Together, we presented the Love and Logic program, a six-week initiative designed to equip families with tools to establish healthy boundaries and guide children toward making positive choices. This program, which saw over 20 registrants, exemplifies our shared commitment to fostering responsible and well-adjusted children. This collaboration extends our resources and impact, demonstrating the power of community partnerships.

The success of these multifaceted community initiatives is a direct result of the dedication and collaborative spirit of our partners.

We extend our deepest gratitude to the Oakland Livingston Human Service Agency for their invaluable contributions and facilitation of the Grandparents Raising Grandchildren group. We also express our sincere appreciation to the South Lyon Area Youth Assistance (SLAYA) for their partnership that has allowed the Love and Logic program to be offered, which has significantly impacted the lives of families in our community.

Moreover, we recognize the unwavering support of organizations such as the Lyon Counseling Center, Be You Therapy, Transformational Choices, and Thriving Minds Behavioral Health, whose contributions to the parent partnership sessions have been instrumental in empowering our parents. Their commitment to our community's well-being is truly commendable, and we are deeply grateful for their partnerships.

South Lyon Community Schools remains steadfast in its commitment to serving as a beacon of support and opportunity, fostering a thriving and connected community for all.
