From automotive paint shops to underground warehouses, Brownstown's Justin McMillen has spent most of his life immersed in two worlds: the automotive industry and Detroit's legendary electronic music scene.

Born and raised Downriver in Riverview, McMillen credits his family and upbringing for shaping his career and lifelong love of music.

"My mom is from Southgate and my dad grew up in Newcomerstown, Ohio," he said. "We were always a music family."

McMillen graduated from Light and Life Christian School in Taylor before earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Exercise Physiology from Wayne State University.

Today, he works for PPG Industries, one of the world's largest paint manufacturers, where he supports multi-shop organizations (MSOs) and collision repair centers throughout the automotive refinish industry.

"I've spent most of my career in automotive," he said. "I've worked in OEM roles, business development, sales, and even as a plant manager. Every position taught me something different."

In 2016, Justin and his wife Jamie moved to Brownstown.

"We built our house and moved here with our sons, Brady and Liam," he said. "The location is fantastic. We feel close to everything, and the township has seen a lot of positive growth over the past several years."

Outside of work, McMillen is perhaps best known in music circles for a passion that stretches back more than three decades.

"I started DJing in 1993," he said. "Back then, Detroit's underground scene was incredible."

He performed at legendary venues and events including Motor Lounge in Hamtramck, warehouse parties in Belleville, Under the Bridge, the Firehouse, Timbo's, and several other spots during the golden age of Detroit’s electronic music scene.

"My very first rave was a Richie Hawtin event," he recalled with a laugh. "The police showed up, and all 400 of us ended up getting trespassing tickets."

In 2005, McMillen launched Kolour Recordings, an independent vinyl label devoted to soulful and deep house music.

"We eventually expanded into several sub-labels," he said. "One project I was especially proud of was House Is The Cure. Artists donated tracks, we'd press records and the proceeds helped families dealing with cancer, funeral expenses and other hardships."

After 15 years, McMillen sold the Kolour catalog to a major distributor in 2020, while ensuring artists retained ownership of their music. His music collection remains legendary among friends.

"I have over 9,000 vinyl records," he said. "Everything from house and techno to jazz, soul, rock, and hip hop."

His collecting interests extend well beyond music. McMillen also accumulates vintage horror memorabilia, Detroit-related antiques, sports cards, and 1980s Santa Cruz skateboard decks.

"My favorite horror movie is Return of the Living Dead," he said. "One of the stars, Linnea Quigley, actually sent me her cast jacket from the original film. It’s one of my favorite collectibles."

When it's time to travel, McMillen enjoys exploring Detroit itself.

"I'm a big believer in the Detroit staycation," he said. "But we also love Chicago and Fort Lauderdale."

Closer to home, you'll often find him enjoying Baldo's Restaurant, Olympic Coney Island or walking around downtown Wyandotte.

For McMillen, life ultimately comes down to a few key things.

"Collect the music, cherish the memories and take care of the people around you," he said. “Those are the things that matter most.”
