Arnold Muscat sees a lot of outstanding student athletes every time he walks down the hall at Livonia Stevenson. But sometimes the school’s athletic director comes across a few who are really special – and Kerrington Fields-McCurdy is one of those people.

“Kerrington is a great example to all students at Stevenson High School,” Muscat said. “Her positive attitude is contagious. She continuously brings people together and also looks out for them. She is a true leader.”

A three-sport athlete, Fields-McCurdy is a “true leader” in the school, on the mat and on the field.

“My goal is to leave high school as the best version of myself,” she said. “So going back to the state finals in wrestling and placing this coming year as a senior would be great. Other goals would include getting closer to God, being a good leader, keeping all A’s and B’s in school and keeping my good GPA (3.8). I want to get all the good things out of high school I can. And last but not least is to have fun.”

Part of her fun is playing three sports because she enjoys staying active, but there is one she favors over the others.

“My favorite and best sport is wrestling,” she said. “I love wrestling so much. It’s my life. All I think about and talk about is wrestling.”

Stevenson does not have a girls team but helping create one is another item on Fields-McCurdy’s to-do list.

“I’ve always wanted to help build one, and I have a lot of help because my dad (John) is the coach of the wrestling team,” she said. “I do practice with the boys, though, and that helps me become stronger and more confident in my moves.”

Wrestling at 125 pounds, Fields-McCurdy reached the state meet for the second year in a row as a junior. While she did not place, she learned what she needs to work on to help better prepare her for her senior year.

“A few weeks before districts, I found out that I had torn the meniscus in my knee,” she said. “Getting the paper that officially said I was hurt changed everything. So I got surgery, and a week later I was back on the mat by the grace of God. I was so happy.”

The daughter of John and Etana Fields-McCurdy, Kerrington, 17, thanks her coach and family for all her success in wrestling.

“I really couldn’t do the sport without my best friend, my dad,” she said. “I wouldn’t be the person and athlete I am without him pushing me in everything. I owe so much to my mom and dad and family, along with my close friends who have helped me along the way.”

That way started in seventh grade when she first started wrestling.

“My dad is a wrestler and was the wrestling coach for my middle school at the time, and I had been around wrestling my whole life so what was I so scared of,” she said. “I started loving it when I learned that it could take me places I’ve never been before.”

Fields-McCurdy, who runs track and cross country for the Spartans, also is a talented singer and hopes her voice can take her to the big stage someday.

“My freshman year I sang the National Anthem at Ford Field for the wrestling state meet and I’ve done plays and musicals since middle school,” she said. “I love music and singing and dancing. My other wrestling coach (Coach Ward) always laughs about how I dance for my warmup before a match.”
