Van Buren Public Schools is pleased to announce a new early literacy initiative designed to strengthen foundational reading skills and deepen the partnership between school and home.

All students in grades K–2 received take-home literacy kits for families to keep and use throughout the school year. These kits have been made possible through funding from the $35 million grant, which supports district efforts to improve early literacy instruction through high-quality, evidence-based resources.

The literacy kits are designed to reinforce essential phonics skills through engaging, hands-on activities. Strong phonics instruction is a critical foundation for early reading success, helping students understand how letters and sounds work together to build words, develop fluency and strengthen comprehension. Consistent practice at home plays an important role in building student confidence and accelerating literacy growth.

Through the support of the $35 million grant, Van Buren Public Schools is able to expand equitable access to instructional materials that directly support early readers. This investment ensures that all K–2 students and their families have meaningful tools to support literacy development beyond the classroom.

To support families in using these materials, a digital resource folder has been provided that includes demonstration videos and step-by-step guidance for each activity. These resources are intended to make it easy for families to engage in structured, purposeful reading practice at home.

In addition, families are invited to participate in a shared digital space where students can post photos and short videos using their literacy kits. This “digital brag board” celebrates student growth, effort and engagement while strengthening the connection between home and school. It also highlights the important literacy work happening across our K–2 classrooms.
