Be prepared for the next big storm

Homeowners usually think about installing whole house generators when they lose power, but more and more people are adding the appliance before disaster strikes, said Anytime Power Systems owner Brian Smith.

“They’re proactive knowing Michigan has a very old grid,” he said. “Most of southeast Michigan’s infrastructure is above ground and has old transformers. In the past, the average power outage was between one and two days and now it’s three to five days. Last year, there were cases of outages that lasted nine days and more.”

More freedom

Whole house generators can help homeowners disconnect from the grid. In fact, they’re becoming increasingly popular as a must-have appliance in new builds.

For some, generators are a necessity, especially if electricity is life or death, because they use durable medical equipment like oxygen or dialysis.

Anytime is an authorized Generac dealer and installer, with installers who focus on safety issues and code requirements in Wayne, Monroe, Washtenaw and Oakland counties, Smith said, adding they must complete rigorous classes and certifications.

“With us it’s all about safety,” he said. “I’ve turned down jobs because they insist on putting the generator in a certain place, but if it’s not safe we won’t do it. If you can’t do it right don’t do it all. We like to call it a worry-free experience with us.”

It typically takes 45 minutes to an hour for an Anytime Power Systems employee to write a free quote.

Many customers mistakenly believe that the cost of a generator is based on square footage. The cost, however, is predicated on the number of 220- volt appliances in the house as well as the amperage and load they carry.

“We’re very thorough,” Smith said. “We feel an educated customer is a good customer. There’s a lot of bad information out there on the internet, so we explain how and why the job has to be done based on code and safety factors.”

The complete installation process usually takes between six and eight hours, depending on the difficulty of the job.

“I’m a homeowner and I want something done right and done fairly at my home,” Smith said. “If I do a good job you will tell 10 people. If I do a bad job you will tell 100 people. A lot of times we will install generators for five or six people in a family.”

Ready to roll

Anytime sets itself apart from others by having generators in stock.

“Most of our competitors don't stock generators,” Smith said. “We are very honest, upfront and transparent. We ask for zero money down. We show up and do the job right. When that generator is up and running, then you pay us.”

Anytime installers can complete a job within 30 to 45 days, “and sometimes sooner depending on the time of the year and how many bad storms we have,” Smith said.

Whole house generators are especially important for homeowners with finished basements and sump pumps because if it floods the cost can be between $25,000 and $30,000 to rehab, he added.
