Smith Insurance Group has been in business 121 years and has earned Best Insurance Agency by the News Herald for the last three years.

Dan Smith, formerly the company’s vice president, became president of the independent Allen Park agency when his mother, Mary K. Smith, died suddenly in September 2023.

Smith said he plans to maintain the high standards clients have learned to expect from the agency that sells home, auto, business, life, renters and flood insurance, as well as umbrella policies.

“Our number-one goal is to be the most referred agency in the state,” Smith said. “We have built the business with an old fashion customer service attitude.”

Pillars of excellence

Smith Insurance was established in 1903 by Anthony Gray. Mary K. began working as a secretary in the office in 1973 after graduating from high school. All these years later, the company has maintained two pillars of excellence.

“We have a history of doing things right,” Smith said. “And we always put our clients first. My mother worked her way up the ladder and became vice president.”

She bought the agency from the founding family in 1992. Although she was semi-retired, she worked until she died.

“She was a pioneer in the insurance business,” Smith said. “She came up through the ranks at a time when women didn’t own businesses. She was an extremely talented insurance agent and business owner. She never took no for an answer and always found a way to make it work.”
