VBPS: District's CTE Programs Enhance Students' Employability, Refine Skills
Published in 2026 Van Buren Today First Quarter

Belleville High School offers several in-house Career Technical Education (CTE) programs, including accounting, business management, cosmetology, marketing, mechatronics, and teacher cadet. Each program offers state and nationally recognized industry credentials and certifications, as well as opportunities for students to earn college credit through articulation agreements.
We are currently in the early stages of applying for CTE status for our digital multimedia course, and will be introducing a new drones program through a Wayne County RESA initiative.
CTE programs at Belleville High School have seen significant success over the past year. The number of students earning industry credentials increased by more than 100 percent between the 2023-24 and 2024-25 school years, resulting in more graduates leaving high school with both a diploma and an industry-recognized certification that enhances their employability. This upward trend continues into the 2025-26 school year, with nearly 80 percent of current mechatronics students having already earned their OSHA 10 card.
The Marketing II program reopened the Tiger Pit School Store and is on track for a record year of sales, including new merchandise developed through market research conducted by students.
The teacher cadet program was selected as one of only three classes statewide to pilot a new MiRegistry career readiness tool, and provide feedback to the State of Michigan.
Students in the cosmetology program are building their clientele and refining their skills in the school’s newly constructed salon, and they are prepared to welcome additional clients from the community.
Meanwhile, accounting and business management students are supporting office staff across Van Buren Public Schools through the district’s work-based learning program.
Partnership with William D. Ford
Due to current building and staffing limitations, some CTE programs are not offered directly on the Belleville High School campus. To ensure students still have access to high-quality career preparation, Van Buren Public Schools partners with the William D. Ford Career-Technical Center in the Wayne-Westland School District.
Through this partnership, students may apply to programs such as culinary arts, construction technology, welding, and several others.
During the winter registration period, students interested in programs offered exclusively at William D. Ford complete an application indicating their preferred areas of study. Admission decisions are made solely by William D. Ford staff, with notifications issued in the spring.
Students accepted into one of the center’s CTE programs have a three-hour block in either the morning or afternoon reserved in their schedule, which includes two hours of instruction and one hour for transportation. District-provided busing ensures consistent access to the program.
Aviation Pathway
Van Buren Public Schools is proud to be an integral part of the Wayne County Coalition for Future Aviation and Aeronautics Professionals. The Coalition is committed to ensuring that students from across Wayne County have access to high-quality aviation and aeronautics career pathways.
Through innovative programming, strong industry partnerships and student-centered learning, we provide opportunities for hands-on experiences, credentialing and postsecondary connections that align with workforce needs and future career success.
Van Buren Public Schools has been designated as a hub for surrounding districts within the central consortium to send students for aviation education.
Belleville High School has already begun implementing its aviation pathway by piloting an Introduction to Aviation I course, supported by curriculum and resources from the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA). The district is also applying for state approval of a CTE drones program, expected to launch during the 2026–27 school year.
