An article in a crafting magazine in 2020 announced the goal of making one million pillowcases for charity. Woodhaven Kiwanis past president Rosemary Robbins and a few Kiwanians took up the cause, and started making pillowcases and sending them to local charities and the McLaren Petosky Hospital pediatrics unit.
Over the years, the project expanded to monthly sewing bees making pillowcases for hospital NICUs, pregnancy centers, an orphanage in Mexico, and making pillows for military vets at a local housing facility. They have made baby items such as stuffed animals and book pillows for hospitalized children, and pillowcases for residents in assisted living facilities.
At a recent club meeting, Rosemary chaired a recognition soup and salad dinner in honor of the sewers. She thanked them for helping to make over 2,800 pillowcases and hundreds of other articles. She presented each sewer with a small gift containing sewing-related tools, and thanked them for their contribution to a project dedicated to changing the world – one child and one country at a time.
