Like many successful business owners, Joel Wheaton began his career working for someone else before discovering a better way. He not only discovered a better way of cleaning carpets and providing restoration services, he discovered a much safer and more environmentally friendly way that helped protect himself, his employees and his clients.

“The whole reason behind why I started the company was because the products that I was using at the previous company were harmful,” Wheaton said. “Not only did I want my customers to be safe but I wanted to be safe, and I wanted the people that are performing the services who work with these products and chemicals every day to be safe. It was really important for me to provide a safe working environment for not only me but my employees.”

Wheaton, who lives in Livonia with his wife and four kids, launched Greener Method Cleaning & Restoration in 2011 in his basement in Livonia. In 2016, he expanded to a commercial space on Stark Road before moving a few years later to Farmington Hills.

On June 1, the company relocated to a 10,000-square-foot facility in Westland. They now have 17 employees with seven vehicles and maintain over 750,000 square feet of commercial, residential and industrial carpet.

The business has grown and has become successful because there was a better and much safer way.

Wheaton said the bigger cleaning companies in town mix their cleaning solution in with their steam, which leaves soap residue behind in a carpet that can act like a dirt magnet.

“There have been advancements for decades now to avoid doing that but companies have decided against it because it's cheaper just to use one product and mix it in with the water,” he said. “We pre-treat with our cleaning solution, and when we come through with the steam, it's a rinse. So we are removing the dirt and grime and also removing the cleaning solution that we put down. We leave nothing behind but the carpet.”

This actually saves customers money because not only is the carpet cleaner and safer because it removes harmful chemicals, but it will reduce the number of times you need to have it cleaned.
