A History of Livonia Public Schools
Published in Livonia Today 2025 Fourth Quarter

Livonia Public Schools (LPS) was established in 1944 through the consolidation of seven smaller school districts and has since grown to become one of the top school districts in Michigan.
This consolidation aimed to provide better educational opportunities for the growing population in Livonia and surrounding areas.
First high school: Bentley High School, the district's first high school, opened in November 1947. It was designed by architect Eberle M. Smith and served as a cornerstone for the district's secondary education. Over the years, additional high schools were established, including Franklin, Stevenson, and Churchill High Schools in the 1960s.
As the population of Livonia grew, so did the need for more educational facilities. The district expanded its infrastructure, adding new schools and upgrading existing ones to accommodate the increasing number of students. Bentley High School underwent several expansions during the 1950s to meet the demands of a growing student body.
Educational Innovations: Over the decades, Livonia Public Schools has adapted its curriculum and educational practices to meet the changing needs of students and the community. The district has earned a reputation for academic excellence and has consistently ranked among the top school districts in Michigan.
Today, Livonia Public Schools serves a diverse student population and continues to focus on providing a safe and nurturing environment for learning. The district is committed to educational excellence and community engagement, ensuring that students are well-prepared for their future endeavors.
