Founded in 1939, Hagopian World of Rugs and Cleaning Services has built a legacy of quality and trustworthy service, and customer care that now spans three generations.

Haroutun (Harry) Hagopian was born in 1895 in what is now present-day Turkey, and survived the Armenian Genocide before immigrating to the United States in 1921.

Starting with nothing, he made his way to Detroit to work at the Ford plant for $5 a day while also working a side business making perfumes. He started a second business in the 1930s manufacturing industrial cleaning compounds, and when a customer asked him for help removing an ink stain from carpet in 1938, he had no idea it would change his life forever.

After successfully removing the stain with his extensive knowledge of chemicals and dyes, he shifted his focus to carpet cleaning, unknowingly establishing the foundation of the Hagopian family business, which is still going strong almost 90 years later.

Today, the business is run by third generation Hagopians – Edmond, Suzanne and Angela – who serve as president, buyer/ manager and vice president of operations, respectively. Together the siblings work together to continue their grandfather’s legacy, ensuring that the company remains rooted in family values and customer-focused excellence.

“We’re all very active in the business and we’ve grown to have 120 employees, in two divisions – retail and cleaning services,” said Edmond Hagopian.

Many customers recognize Hagopian’s signature purple trucks that provide in-home carpet cleaning. On top of that, the business operates a state-of-the-art “rug cleaning spa” at its Oak Park cleaning facility, where they clean over 35,000 rugs annually.

With six full-time rug repair specialists on staff, Hagopian also specializes in stain removal, mothproofing, pad replacement, expert repair and more.

“Although we have a good customer base in the area, we don’t have anything Downriver that makes it convenient, so we thought it would be a good idea to offer a pickup and delivery service for our customers and give them a discount,” Hagopian said.

This new service has been well received and is another example of the company’s commitment to the people it serves.
