Woodhaven Kiwanians are finishing up a busy summer and preparing for fall. They held two successful fundraisers this summer. They also partnered with STEP as their nonprofit for June, and STEP donated $2,110 to Woodhaven Kiwanis projects.

Kiwanians also held their annual Southgate Police Sergeant Chris Cassette Memorial Golf Outing on August 2. The weather was outstanding and 178 golfers joined in for best ball scramble at Riverview Highlands. The day was filled with raffles, special activities and culminated with a banquet at Crystal Gardens.

The golf outing raised over $13,000 for community projects. A very special Kiwanis thank you goes to Chris’s brother, Kevin, and sister-in-law, Mary Cassette, for the hard work they put into the golf outing.

Looking toward the fall, Woodhaven Kiwanians have set Saturday, October 25 for their annual “An Apple for Ryan” non-perishable food delivery. Working with Woodhaven-Brownstown and Trenton Public Schools, they hope to beat last year’s record of three school buses filled with food delivered to local food pantries.

The first weekend in December will bring Kiwanis/Salvation Army bell ringing. Woodhaven Kiwanians work together with Woodhaven High School students to spend the day at Woodhaven Wal-Mart.

Early in December, Woodhaven Kiwanians will team up with the Charity Club at Woodhaven Upper Elementary School to collect a bus full of toys for the Santa Shop at the Downriver Salvation Army.

January 31 will be their Kids Against Hunter packing. Over 300 students will come together to pack meals for those with food insecurities in our community and around the world.

Woodhaven Kiwanis membership chairman, Brenden Hoy, encourages residents 18 and older to get involved in their community through Kiwanis. Woodhaven Kiwanians meet at the Woodhaven Community Center on Wednesday evening at 6:30 p.m. Meetings only last an hour. The Woodhaven Kiwanis Club serves North Brownstown, Trenton, Woodhaven, as well as Trenton Public Schools and Woodhaven-Brownstown Schools.
